IIH started at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in early 2007 as a student group responding to the inaugural Yunus Challenge to Alleviate Poverty (improving adherence to tuberculosis drugs). IIH won that challenge and the MIT IDEAS competition. IIH’s initial focus was technology to improve adherence to TB drugs. In 2008, IIH members began working with rural communities in Bihar. In 2010, IIH established a permanent tuberculosis treatment program in Bihar.
