Health workers using the uBox in Patna, India
Check out our blog for more info!
The uBox prototype has been tested and refined using rapid mechanical and electronic prototyping allowing seven revisions in ten months. It is now being manufactured in small lots before production is ramped up. Our goal is to apply the uBox to treatment programs in both the developed and developing world.
The first large scale trial with 100 uBoxes is scheduled to begin in May 2008 in Bihar, India. The uBox will be used in a 6-month long tuberculosis (TB) treatment program run by the Prajnopaya Foundation in remote, rural areas with indigent populations. In 2006, Prajnopaya's directly observed therapy (DOT) program treated close to 600 patients with a 77% recovery rate. The foundation will use the full functionality (uBox, uKey, uSoft) to improve drug adherence by enabling early and targeted intervention, objective criteria for supervising and rewarding DOT workers, and reducing burden by allowing compliant patients to serve themselves.
We are currently exploring partnerships with institutions in the U.S. to conduct trials.
